The talented Meital Smith ’16 will be graduating from Seattle Academy this year, but she leaves her art to inspire future SAAS students.
Meital has been painting a mural in the vocal practice rooms to liven up music rehearsals. The mural, when completed, will consist of a monster with its mouth in one corner of the practice room mirrored by the image of a woman in another corner, also with a gaping mouth. Both will appear to be serenading someone. If she has time, she plans on connecting the two with a musical staff.
The project incorporates two of the main art forms Meital has pursued while at SAAS, singing and art. Last year she participated in both Jazz Choir II and Vocal Ensemble. Meital said, “I spent a lot of time in [the practice room] and one day I thought to myself, ‘It’s boring in here, and it always smells bad. The least it could do is look a little nicer.’” Meital acted on that thought and decided to paint a mural in order to beautify what she calls the “Altoid Box.”
Meital encourages people to take photos and interact with the mural.
Drop by the Seattle Academy Arts Show today (Thursday, May 5, from 5 – 8 PM) to see Meital’s mural on the second floor of the Arts Center.
